70s Soul LPs Worth Money

A Chicago & Midwest Guide for Identifying Rare 70s Soul Records

Wee LP

Most Chicago-area record collections include familiar 70s and 80s R&B favorites — Prince, Michael Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire, Gap Band, Isley Brothers, Rick James, Commodores and more. These are great albums, but they were pressed in very large numbers, so they typically aren’t considered “valuable.”

Mixed into some long-held collections, however, are rare 70s soul LPs that collectors still look for — especially Chicago, Ohio, gospel-soul, or private-press titles. The examples below show the kinds of records that get attention when found clean.

Condition Note:
These LPs are genuinely uncommon, but only clean, well-preserved copies have collector demand. Heavily worn copies — even of rare titles — usually aren’t valuable.

Rare 70s Soul LPs Collectors Still Look For

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Top-Tier Private-Press Rarities

Wee – “You Can Fly On My Aeroplane” (Owl, Ohio)
Hard to find clean; harmony-soul favorite. Worn copies usually have no value.

Timeless Legend – “Synchronized” (Pendulum, Ohio)
Beloved sweet-soul LP; clean originals get real collector attention.

Cleveland Robinson – “Cleveland” (Nosnibor, Ohio)
Private-press soul/funk with strong demand when clean.

Tomorrow’s People – “Open Soul” (Chicago)
Chicago sweet-soul essential; rarely surfaces in clean condition.

Chapparrals – “Shake Your Head” (Maximillion)
Modern-soul/boogie; clean jackets are very uncommon.

Midwest modern soul; commonly found worn.

Boscoe LP

⭐⭐⭐ Regional & Private-Press Rarities

Boscoe – S/T (Strong Records, Chicago)
Cult Chicago soul/funk LP; jackets often suffer shelfwear.

Sometimes appears in Midwest collections; condition is key.

Ultimates – “You’re My Lady” (TSG)

Common 70s/80s Soul & R&B LPs We See Every Week

Prince • Michael Jackson • Gap Band • Earth Wind & Fire • Isley Brothers • Commodores • Rick James • Lionel Richie • Luther Vandross • Whitney Houston • Smokey Robinson • Kool & The Gang

These albums are excellent but were pressed in huge quantities, so they normally don’t have collector value. They are, however, the backbone of most Chicago-area collections we buy.
